Be not surprised when you see the base of a large tree wrapped in holy cloth. This highlights its significance, as Balinese people believe spirits and demon inhabit the large trees. As well as the massive Banyan trees with their thick, dangling roots. Older banyan trees are characterized by their aerial prop roots that grow into thick woody trunks which, with age, can become indistinguishable from the main trunk. Another sacred tree is the Milk Wood tree, which is soft wood, making it a favorite for carvers of the witch-like Rangda masks. A huge Bunut tree, a sacred and unique tree, can be found in the centre of Gesing village, at the south side of the main road where clove and coffee plantations are opposite. The Bunut tree is 90 meters high and at one time it will reach a height of 115 meters. The diameter is ~75 meter.

During the Dutch colonial time in the 1940-ties, 300 local heroes were hidden in the tree and incredible, as it may seem, the Dutch troops could not see them. The spirit of the tree made them invisible, as the locals state.
